In a hushed hospital waiting room — where no one is quite arriving and no one is quite leaving — Professor Haru hands Sakura a strange idea: the most modern room in Japan might be its oldest. It's called the doma, the earthen-floor space just inside the front door, and for decades it was paved over in the name of clean, shoe-free living.

But the dirt floor is coming back. Renovation platforms now list a "wide doma" as a standard request. Soundproof rentals add power outlets to their entrance floors. A Kagawa guesthouse turns its doma into a local crossroads; a Yokohama rental lets tenants test a tiny café on theirs; a Fukuoka hotel makes you cross a long earthen entry before you reach your room. The doma, it turns out, was never really a room at all — it was a permission slip between worlds.

As our lives stop fitting into labeled rooms, maybe what we need isn't more space, but softer, undefined space — one honest patch of ground by the door. What can the world's oldest room teach us about how we'll live tomorrow?
