Japanese weddings, chapels, and one company's view: an industry with no repeat customers.
▼ About This Episode
Do Japanese people have Christian weddings? Sakura and Haru are at a hotel in Japan, waiting for a wedding in its chapel. Sakura wonders if the groom is Christian. Not necessarily, Haru says: in Japan, even people who aren't Christian often choose a chapel wedding. And holding the wedding at a hotel or a wedding hall only became the normal thing during the postwar economic boom, about 50 to 70 years ago. In a recent survey of people aged 20 to 49 who married between April 2024 and March 2025, only about half held a wedding ceremony.
One wedding company, CRAZY, suspects there is a problem on the industry's side. In its view, weddings have no repeat customers: however wonderful the day is, almost no one says, "Let's do the next one here too!" So companies tend to put more weight on bringing in new couples than on the ceremony itself. Guests who attend a wedding where the experience comes second may leave thinking, "If it's like this, I don't need to have one myself." The company sees this as one reason the wedding market is shrinking.
Several companies are now trying to rebuild the wedding industry, each in its own way. CRAZY announced it would team up with other wedding companies and run venues together. A wedding venue in Ise, in Mie Prefecture, announced in August 2026 that it had made six items free, including the ceremony fee, for couples who hold, and pay for, a reception or dinner party for at least ten people. And Brass invites couples and their families back to the venue every year for family photos and light refreshments. Could a child who grows up visiting that venue become its customer one day?
