#2-26E. The Therapeutic Paradigm Shift in Sjögren's Disease (JCM, 2025)

How often do we underestimate the severity and complexity of Sjögren’s Disease (SjD) in daily practice? We review the latest insights from Horai et al. detailing the current clinical aspects of SjD, an autoimmune disorder characterized by sicca symptoms and potential extraglandular involvement. The authors highlight the geographical differences in epidemiology and diagnostic criteria, noting that unique criteria are still utilized in Japan. While symptomatic therapies remain the mainstay, the most important clinical finding discussed is that molecular targeted drugs, including biologics and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, are poised to bring about a paradigm shift in SjD treatment, promising improved prognosis for patients. This significance must be weighed critically, however, as emerging diagnostic technologies like artificial intelligence tools for assessment, though promising, are still preliminary and need to be studied in greater numbers of patients.
