🌏 For our international listeners:
Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Kurage has to leave his company-provided apartment in a few months. His decision on where to move: a mirror-image 1K unit in the same building. Roughly 20 meters away. One floor down.
Yes, he's aware this sounds unusual. But the logic holds up.
No moving company needed — just a friend, a hand with the big furniture, and one yakiniku dinner. Moving costs: near zero. No new furniture required — just rotate what he has. Life environment: identical from day one, since every supermarket, station, and routine stays the same.
The backstory: his company's housing subsidy runs out after a certain number of years, meaning he has to leave the apartment the company selected for him — and the subsidy goes to zero. Rather than upgrading to a larger or trendier place (which would mean a significant rent increase), Kurage ran the numbers and found the same building was simply the best value available.
Priorities going in: walking distance to the station (non-negotiable), no elevator required (lower floors preferred — a past experience in a 10th-floor Finnish apartment made him reluctant to go out at all), no need for auto-lock. The upgrade from 1K to 1LDK would cost roughly ¥30,000–40,000 more per month. For now: not worth it.
The broader point: don't let a move push you into upgrading just because it feels like the right moment. Start from zero, define what you actually need, and let the logic lead — even if the answer is "same building, different floor."
Aimed at anyone in Japan's manufacturing sector approaching the end of their company housing period. This one's for you.
