🌏 For our international listeners:
Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Tomato just returned from Ginzan Onsen — a famous hot spring resort in Yamagata — and spent ¥120,000 for one night. This episode is his attempt to justify it.
The breakdown: bullet train to Yamagata, round trip, costs about ¥30,000. A room at Ginzan Onsen in winter runs ¥50,000–60,000 before meals. Add everything up and ¥100,000 was arguably unavoidable. The "overpayment" was maybe ¥20,000 in unnecessary premium.
The snow scenery was genuinely beautiful — it had snowed the night before, which made for a perfect winter postcard. The hot spring itself? "About average, really." No dramatic sulfur, no extreme acidity. The guy on the bus was loud for most of the trip. Lesson learned: no more long-distance bus travel for a while.
The framing that makes it feel okay: compared to a European flight, ¥120,000 barely gets you off the ground. The density of spending was high; the absolute number wasn't unreasonable.
The real takeaway: Tomato usually travels to places he's personally drawn to. This time he tried something different — going somewhere because it's famous. Seeing what all the fuss is about, forming your own opinion, and earning the right to talk about it. You can't dismiss something you've never experienced.
